Product vs custom software: how to choose
A practical framework for deciding whether to adopt an existing product like KAYA or Hoppa — or invest in a custom build.

Start with the constraint
Do not start with technology. Start with the bottleneck: inaccurate inventory, slow bookings, messy handoffs, or revenue leakage. If you cannot name the constraint in one sentence, you are not ready to buy or build.
When a product is enough
Choose a product when your problem matches a proven workflow. Retail stock and sales often map to KAYA. Conversational flight booking maps to Hoppa. Products ship faster, cost less to start, and improve through shared iteration.
When custom is justified
Build custom when your process is a competitive advantage, integrations are unique, or no product covers the critical path. Custom work should still start narrow — one workflow, clear success metrics, then expand.
The KAMSERA recommendation model
In a strategy session we assess fit first. If a product solves 80% of the problem, we recommend that path. If not, we design a custom MVP with the same discipline: problem, outcome, timeline, and ownership after launch.
